Punjab Wildlife Census

The scheme titled “Punjab Wildlife Census (On-Going Scheme)” has been initiated to establish a comprehensive and scientifically reliable baseline of wildlife resources across the Punjab Province. The primary objective of the project is to collect detailed data on wildlife species, including both fauna and flora, and to assess population size and trends of key biodiversity components. The scheme also focuses on identifying and analyzing major threats to wildlife, such as habitat loss and environmental degradation, while employing GIS-based habitat mapping to document species of special concern. Through the identification and spatial mapping of biodiversity hotspots and the zonation of protected areas based on species distribution patterns, the project aims to strengthen evidence-based planning and conservation decision-making.

The final outcomes of the scheme include a province-wide census of wild animals and birds, along with geo-mapping and geo-tagging of wildlife and their potential habitats to enable long-term monitoring in natural environments. The project will support accurate estimation of wildlife populations, identification of indigenous and exotic species, and improved protection of critical habitats. In addition to ecological benefits, the scheme is expected to contribute to poverty reduction through direct and indirect employment, enhance capacity building of departmental staff and the private sector, raise public awareness to discourage poaching, and promote better resource management and sustainable nature conservation throughout Punjab.
